From upstream LED chip manufacturers to downstream LED packaging manufacturers, to application-side display and other system manufacturers, to TV and computer terminal consumer electronics manufacturers, all talk about Mini LED , Even gearing up, investing a lot of money, human resources and other resources to do a big job on Mini LED.

For example, after the rename of TCL Technology from TCL Group, in addition to the compelling Micro-LED display technology joint laboratory, Li Dongsheng bluntly said: "Mini LED is our main event this year." Others such as Hisense, Asus, Innolux, Friends Titan, BOE and other giants have launched terminal products such as Mini LED backlight or similar technology TV, monitor, VR and car display. What pushed Mini LED above the tuyere of the optoelectronic display industry?

1. Apple's "push"

Apple has once again proven its unrivalled leadership and appeal to the entire industry chain as a consumer electronics leader. According to the prediction of well-known Apple analyst Guo Mingxuan, Apple is currently developing 6 Mini LED products, including: 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 27-inch iMac Pro in 4Q20, 14.1-inch MacBook Pro in 2020 (upgraded from 13.3-inch), and 16-inch MacBook Pro, 10.2-inch iPad, and 7.9-inch iPad mini. Apple's aggressive mini LED product strategy will force competitors to launch similar products in the next few years. Apple's "push" is the key to Mini LED's fire and subsequent continuous heating and acceleration.

2. “Regulations” of policies
China plans to account for 40% of 4K TV sales in 2020 that meet the requirements of high contrast, etc., and it will be fully popular in 2022, while 8K TV sales will account for more than 5% in 2022. 4K / 8K TVs require high contrast, wide color gamut, high color depth, and fast response. Compared with display technologies such as rear projection, laser projection, and OLED, one of the main disadvantages of traditional LCD technology is its low contrast.

The backlight of the current mainstream LCD displays is still under overall control, and it is not possible to achieve zone dimming. And most of them are based on the traditional side-light LED backlight, which is difficult to meet the requirements, and the direct-type Mini LED local dimming (Local Dimming) backlight can meet the 4K / 8K display requirements.

3. Small pitch "liters"
The important feature of Mini LED compared to small-pitch LED is that the size continues to shrink and de-packaged. Small-pitch LEDs are mainly positioned for large commercial displays larger than 100 inches, while Mini LED backlights are mainly used for consumer electronics within 100 inches. The display may be used for indoor large screen display. Mini LEDs can achieve higher resolution and display effects, but Mini LEDs are the result of "upgrading" in which the size of small-pitch LEDs is shrinking.

4. LED "support"
The mature LED industry's support for Mini LED is mainly reflected in:

1) Mini LED backlit LCDs have lower cost than OLEDs, and display effects, thin and light experience, curved display and large-scale mass production capabilities are comparable to OLEDs, with longer life and lower power consumption.

2) Mini LED backlight has shorter optical distance (OD) than traditional direct-type LED backlight, and achieves local dimming in a smaller range, higher color contrast, better brightness uniformity, and ultra-thin end products. High color rendering and power saving. It is simpler than the side-entry LED backlight light guide system, and the light source is more evenly distributed. At the same time, the end products can have side-entry thin and direct-type frameless.

3) Although the size of Mini LED chips is generally around 200 microns, the requirements for line width accuracy of the production line have increased, and chip miniaturization has increased manufacturing difficulties, but LED epitaxy and the chip industry are relatively mature technologies, and they are much more abundant than OLEDs. The supply channels of LED chips make Mini LED chips have no technically large threshold. The difficulty of Mini LED backlight is mainly in the design of the backlight system and compatible and collaborative design with the LCD panel.

5. “Resistance” of μ-LED.
μ-LED display is known as the ultimate display technology, with self-lighting and no backlight; higher electro-optical conversion efficiency, low power consumption; good stability, long life; no size development restrictions; super fast switching time and many other advantages. However, μ-LED displays are currently limited by the side-effects and luminous efficiency of the μ-LED chip itself, as well as the key technologies such as the efficiency, yield, colorization, detection, and repair of the massive transfer technology of the μ-LED chip.

Sony, Samsung and domestic TCL Technology have launched μ-LED display TVs, but the prices are extremely expensive (such as Sony's price of 5 million US dollars), mainly as a concept display. It will take time for μ-LED display TVs and other large-screen consumer electronics products to "fly into the homes of ordinary people". μ-LED's temporarily high price and technical problems are also one of the factors that major upstream and downstream manufacturers will temporarily turn their attention to Mini LED.
